In differential bus topologies, signals travel as electrical waves along twisted-pair cables. When these waves reach the end of the line, they will reflect back if they run into an open-ended circuit. The reflected wave collides with incoming data, causing bit errors, corruption, and sync failure. A termination resistor matches the cable's characteristic impedance (120 ohms for RS-485) and absorbs the signal energy, preventing reflections.
2. What is the difference between a loopback terminator and a bus terminator? +
A loopback terminator is a diagnostic tool that routes the transmit pairs (TX+, TX-) back to the receive pairs (RX+, RX-) on the same port, tricking the system into testing its own port hardware. A bus terminator is connected at the physical ends of a multi-drop transmission line to match impedance, utilizing specific resistor configurations between pins (e.g., Pins 1 and 2, or Pins 7 and 8) to absorb signal energy.
